This map shows the area adjacent to an explosion in the Mulga Mine in Woodward, Ala., that occurred 1937 Oct. 15. The scale is 1" = 100' and is a detailed depiction drawn by the Office of the State Mine Inspector. The map is a layout of the mine's intricate shafts and tunnels that is marked to show ventilation, stoppings, doors, curtains, and haulage routes. The inspector's map indicates the direction and extent of the explosion by noting dust settlement, heat damage, and blown out areas. Symbols show where fatalities occurred and if death was caused by fire or asphyxiation. The escape routes taken by surviviors is also shown. A smaller diagram shows where an open safety lamp and a burnt match caused the explosion. The scale is 1" = 5' and provides details of the exact area of the explosion.
